Story:
The collecting of bush medicine leaves has long been a part of traditional Aboriginal life and culture and is part of the secret world of womens’ business. Leaves from many different plants are collected and stored for medicinal uses.
Women from the Anmatyerre region gather the leaves to be used in traditional bush medicines. The leaves are boiled and mashed with animal fats (emu or kangaroo) making a medicinal pou paste which can last for many months. The paste is then applied to the skin to heal a multitude of afflictions such as bites, wounds, skin infections, rashes, skin cancer and the like. The leaves are also steeped in hot water to make an infusion, or healing tea. Bush Medicine Leaves also is used to treat Headaches, Coughs, Colds, Fevers, Diarrhoea, Wounds Aches and Pains Stings, Sore Eyes and Toothache.There is a great variety of medicine leaves and plants that are used.
